The area’s history is strongly characterized by the Dalälven River, a vital feature of the district. The toils and troubles of previous generations have left clear marks.

It is the unique natural and cultural environments of the area that prompted UNESCO to designate the Nedre Dalälven River Landscape as a Biosphere Reserve.
